The Cannabis Embassy coordinates cultural action within the UNESCO framework, with a focus on national implementation of international norms related to culture, science, and education.
UNESCO has adopted a range of treaties, recommendations, and soft-law frameworks in these fields. Their application to Cannabis heritage, knowledge systems, and cultural practices at the local level forms the core of our UNESCO-related work. The Cannabis Embassy provides support to national initiatives aligning with these instruments.
UNESCO’s main governing bodies are the General Conference and the Executive Board, which guide the organisation’s overall priorities and governance. We are present selectively at relevant UNESCO’s specialised meetings, mostly:
- The World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development (Mondiacult) is UNESCO’s principal global platform for cultural policy; it shapes global consensus on culture’s role in development and in the protection of cultural rights.
- Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH Committee) is a treaty body which oversees the implementation of the 2003 Convention of the same name. We only follow and oversee the Committee’s work.
With your support, we hope to be able to expand our work at UNESCO in coming years.
Our work at UNESCO is cross-cutting with our work related to cultural rights, in particular with Human Rights Treaty Bodies, namely the Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (for the ICESCR treaty).

The Cannabis Embassy’s Permanent Mission in Geneva (PM Geneva) is the Cannabis Embassy Government‘s body (under the Ministry of External Affairs) mandated to interact with international organisations headquartered in Geneva as well as Paris, Rome, and Montréal.
Currently, the PM Geneva is engaged with:
- CBD. Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (Montreal).
- FAO. Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (Rome).
- ILO. International Labour Organisation.
- OHCHR. Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
- Human Rights Treaty Bodies.
- UNCTAD. United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.
- UNESCO. United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (Paris).
- UPOV. International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants.
- South Centre.
- WHO. World Health Organisation
- WIPO. World Intellectual Property Organisation.
