Advocacy History | Past Actions since 1998

The Cannabis Embassy was proclaimed in 2024. But there are decades of actions before which led to the Embassy.

This page lists a chronology of the main international & coordinated cannabis policy activities prior to 2024, which the Cannabis Embassy considers as part of its advocacy history. This chronology starts in 1998, as the UN convened a world drug summit that pledged the complete eradication of all drugs within 10 years. Cannabis activists started to ramp-up organising after that date.

It is important to note (and pay tribute to) a number of Rastafari community leaders, who were the first persons to ever go to the United Nations to defend cannabis, as early as the 1960s. The efforts of Mexican Dr Leopoldo Salazar Viniegra, who defended a public health-focused legalisation for all drugs at the League of Nations in 1939, must also be remembered.
